“The pianist seems to take one hell of a delight in making Beethoven’s music really swing. He often uses minimal tempo delays or accelerandi to encounter Beethoven’s music in a different inner tension. Nothing is taken for granted anymore. Winkelmann seems to detach Beethoven from the great tradition, to tear him out of the hands of the larger-than-life interpreters like Brendel, Barenboim, Kempff or Buchbinder, so to speak, in order to be allowed to shape and discover him freshly and freely once again. The result is breathtaking, as the listener participates in a quasi-jazzy interpretation that sheds new light on melody and structure. In doing so, however, Winkelmann only turns the screws a little. But he knows exactly where to start in order to make this new, lively and not at all grumpy Beethoven a listening experience.”
